The last week of September already!

 Hello Families! 

September 26th was Johnny Appleseed day and this has been a week filled with apples! We made applesauce, hypothesized  about apples and apple parts.  We wondered, would they sink or float? We even practiced our math skills with apples and measured how tall we were, (with paper apples).  

In Science we are still learning about groundwater and we connect with a scientist via live stream on Tuesdays and Thursdays! 

In math we have completed our first math test and you should have seen that in folders. Unit 2 is all about adding and subtracting within ten using equations and word problems. 

We will not have spelling homework this week.  We will continue to work on segmenting and blending sounds here at school.  Practicing word families, rhymes, and tapping out sounds at home is very helpful. 

Don't forget that on 10/7 Friday students have no school ( as well as the following Monday 10/10). 

Our class seems to love "Pop its" and they could prove to be very helpful to segment words and counting on,  if  anyone would like to donate some here are a couple links, we would only need 5 or 6 for a small group to use at a time.

First Grade Adventures

 Last week we had crazy weather and that made for a lot of inside recess!  We colored, built with legos, and some first graders even played Uno.  We are usually really good at playing together and sharing supplies.

 We have started to try on our read to self and read with a buddy work.  During these times students always start by reading books at their level from their book boxes.  You can expect books to start coming home near the end of October. 

During Science we have been learning about groundwater and navigating  the scientific process via a virtual trip to Kenya.  Students at a school there need fresh drinking water closer to their school. Together with a live stream from scientists we are thinking along with them to solve their problem.  You should have also seen a Science magazine that came home last week. 

We always have fun when our Peer Helpers come to visit!  So far they are teaching us how to access things on our computers. 

Playing in Mrs. Wishy Washy's mud!

First graders had fun today playing in the "mud."  Just like the farm animals from Mrs. Wishy Washy's stories. Soon we will have a class book that includes each student as a character in the story! 

 

First Grade Is Always Busy!

First grade is always busy! We wished Abby and  Mr. Tweedie a happy birthday this week. We met peer helpers, played math games, rocked our spelling tests and more!
